Features:
- CI840A PROFIBUS DP-V1 Interface module
- S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed and modular process I/O system
- Control Systems 800xA I/Os S800 I/O Communication Modules
Its primary function is to enable reliable data exchange between field-level I/O modules and the upper-level control system via the PROFIBUS DP industrial communication protocol. As a gateway between the control processor and distributed I/O units, the CI840A 3BSE041882R1 ensures efficient transmission of process data, diagnostic information, and control commands within the automation network. This feature enables complex industrial systems to maintain real-time synchronous communication between controllers, sensors, and actuators.
This module allows multiple S800 I/O nodes to be connected to the PROFIBUS DP network, thereby extending the coverage of the control system without centralized cabling. The CI840A 3BSE041882R1 continuously monitors communication integrity through integrated diagnostics and status monitoring functions and reports network status to the control system. This improves system reliability and simplifies troubleshooting in large industrial facilities such as power plants, oil and gas facilities, and chemical plants.
The CI840A 3BSE041882R1 ABB PROFIBUS DP-V1 Interface module may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

This module receives control commands and configuration data from the central controller via the PROFIBUS network and converts these communication frames into internal signals that can be parsed by the connected S800 I/O modules. Simultaneously, the CI840A 3BSE041882R1 acquires process data and diagnostic information from the I/O module and packages this information into PROFIBUS data frames for transmission back to the controller. Through this bidirectional communication process, the module ensures deterministic real-time data exchange between distributed field devices and the central automation system.
It is designed for high-availability environments where system downtime is unacceptable:
1. High-reliability process control: Widely used in the petroleum, chemical, and power industries for continuous production equipment requiring constant monitoring and control.
2. Marine engineering: Certified by classification societies (ABS, DNV-GL, LR), suitable for marine automation systems.
3. Hazardous environments: Certified in Class 1, Zone 2, suitable for flammable and explosive industrial sites.
4. General manufacturing: Used in automotive, food and beverage, and water/wastewater treatment systems.
Redundant Communication: Its primary function is to provide 1+1 redundancy. This ensures that when one communication module fails, the backup module can immediately take over without interrupting the process.
Remote I/O Management: It collects monitoring information and processes signals from distributed I/O modules, acting as a "manager" for a cluster of up to 12 modules.
HART Pass-Through: Allows the controller to communicate directly with intelligent field instruments to obtain maintenance and diagnostic data.
Hot Configurable In-Run (HCIR): Enables engineers to add or modify I/O modules while the system is fully operational, avoiding costly process restarts.
