Primary Industrial Applications
Features:
- SDCS-FEX-2A Power Supply Circuit Board
- DCS Thyristor Power Converters for DC drive systems 25 to 5200 A
- It is a key internal component in DC motors used to provide and regulate excitation current
Its primary function is to provide a controllable DC power supply to the excitation winding of a DC motor, controlling the motor's magnetic field strength by precisely adjusting the excitation current. It supports field weakening, enabling the motor to operate beyond its rated speed, and provides overcurrent and undercurrent protection for the excitation circuit.
Furthermore, as a semi-controlled or fully controlled excitation power supply module, this board integrates power semiconductors (such as thyristors) and their trigger circuits, allowing direct communication with the main control board (such as the SDCS-CON series) via an internal bus. In complex DC drive applications, it ensures coordinated control between excitation current, armature voltage, and speed.
The SDCS-FEX-2A 3ADT311500R1 ABB Power Supply Circuit Board may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The SDCS-FEX-2A employs phase-controlled rectification technology. It receives digital trigger signals from the main control board and converts them into thyristor trigger pulses through onboard circuitry, thereby rectifying the AC input power supply into an adjustable DC excitation voltage. The onboard circuitry includes a current detection feedback loop to monitor the magnitude of the excitation current in real time and feed it back to the central processing unit (CPU), forming a closed-loop regulation. When a higher speed is required, the control system instructs the main control board to reduce the excitation current, utilizing the principle of weakened magnetic field to increase the motor speed.
- The SDCS-FEX-2A is suitable for harsh industrial environments requiring extremely high precision and reliability in motor control:
- Metals & Mining: Controlling the main drive units of rolling mills and heavy transport equipment where torque and speed stability are critical.
- Pulp & Paper: Managing motor excitation in continuous production lines, ensuring stable tension and paper web speed.
- Material Handling: High-power frequency converters for gantry cranes, elevators, and large conveyor systems.
- Specialty Heavy Industries: Used in oil drilling platforms, ships, ski lifts, and large battery charging systems.
