Allen Bradley's SLC 500 Series chassis (model 1746-A13) plays a vital role in industrial control systems. This chassis can accommodate up to 13 modules and features a vertical connection design, allowing connection to other 1746-A13 units via 1746-C9 cables. Users can securely mount it to control panels using its eight mounting clips.
In terms of electrical specifications, the chassis supports a maximum backplane current of 10 amps at 5.1 volts DC and a maximum backplane current of 2.88 amps at 24 volts DC. The chassis has an optimal operating temperature range of 0 to 60 degrees Celsius and can withstand storage temperatures from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, it can withstand relative humidity from 5% to 95% (non-condensing), making it suitable for a wide variety of environments. The 1746-A13 chassis is compatible with a wide range of input/output (I/O) modules, expanding the flexibility and adaptability of the control systems it supports.
The 1746-A13 Allen Bradley SLC 500 series A Chassis may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Module Address Format: Slot numbers on the 1746-A13 backplane start from slot 0 (processor slot) and count sequentially from left to right up to slot 12. When writing ladder logic or mapping I/O tags, the memory bit structure must strictly match these physical slot addresses (e.g., inputs on slot 1 are I:1/0).
Power Consumption Audit: Since the 1746-A13 can accommodate up to 13 modules, engineers must rigorously calculate the backplane power budget. High-density analog modules or special modules draw significant current from the 5V and 24V power rails; if the total module power consumption exceeds the maximum rated output of the selected 1746-P series power supply, the PLC may experience intermittent backplane communication failures or unexpected overheating trips.
Rockwell Automation has officially discontinued the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 series. This product line, including the 1746-A13 chassis, was completely discontinued by the end of 2024. If you are currently maintaining equipment based on this chassis, the factory will no longer provide new replacement parts. To extend system life and ensure network security, Rockwell strongly recommends upgrading existing SLC 500 architectures to modernized CompactLogix 5380 or ControlLogix 5580 systems using the simplified hardware mapping modernization migration kit.
