Information

Overview Manuals How It Works Compatible SFP Transceiver Modules

Features:

  • 20 Fast Ethernet Ports: Features 16 copper RJ45 ports, 2 combo ports, and 2 SFP fiber slots, all operating strictly at 10/100 Mbps
  • DLR Redundancy: Natively supports Device Level Ring topology for millisecond-level network fault recovery
  • Premier Logix Integration: Uses predefined Logix tags for plug-and-play switch diagnostics directly in Studio 5000
This Ethernet switch supports the Common Industrial Protocol for Ethernet (CIP). CIP is an industry protocol supported by the Open Equipment Vendors Association (ODVA) for communicating with Logix controllers, exchanging data, and interacting with visualization systems. This managed Ethernet switch offers 20 ports, including 16 Fast Ethernet copper (FE) ports supporting 10/100 Mbps, 2 Gigabit Ethernet composite ports supporting 1 Gbps, and 2 Small Form Factor (SNP) slots for Fibre and Gigabit Ethernet.

The 1783-BMS20CL features an open enclosure. It requires installation in an enclosure that protects against field contaminants, dust, moisture, and water. The module operates over a temperature range of -40 to +60 degrees Celsius (-40 to +140 degrees Fahrenheit) and is suitable for ambient temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). This Ethernet switch requires no backplane for installation. It is a standalone device powered by an external power source, capable of providing a maximum current of 0.5…3.0 A within a voltage range of 12-48VDC, and conforms to Class 2/Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) standards.

The 1783-BMS20CL Allen Bradley Stratix 5700 20 Port Managed Switch may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The 1783-BMS20CL manages and routes local data traffic on the factory floor by connecting automation devices like PLCs, HMIs, and drives through its 20 Fast Ethernet ports.
It uses a specialized "Lite" firmware to monitor network health and traffic, while automatically utilizing Device Level Ring (DLR) technology to instantly reroute data along a backup path if a cable gets damaged.
Additionally, it continuously translates its internal diagnostic data into predefined Logix tags, allowing a connected PLC to monitor port status and network alarms in real time without any custom programming.
The 1783-BMS20CL features 2 SFP slots that support 100 Mbps fiber optic plugins. The official compatible Allen-Bradley part numbers are:
1783-SFP100FX: Multi-mode fiber transceiver module (100 Mbps, LC connector)
1783-SFP100LX: Single-mode fiber transceiver module (100 Mbps, LC connector)

Technical notes

The 1783-BMS20CL industrial switch was officially discontinued on September 01, 2024, with the newer Stratix 5200 series model 1783-CMS20DB recommended as its direct engineering upgrade. This 20-port device features a full Fast Ethernet architecture where all interfaces, including the sixteen copper RJ45 ports, two combo ports, and two SFP slots, are strictly limited to a maximum speed of 10/100 Mbps. Operating on the Lite firmware feature set, the switch does not support advanced Layer 3 routing, network address translation (NAT), or access control lists (ACL). However, it retains seamless integration within the Rockwell Automation ecosystem, providing predefined Logix tags for direct Studio 5000 PLC diagnostics and native Device Level Ring (DLR) support for millisecond-level network redundancy. For reliable physical deployment, its fanless IP30 open-style enclosure operates from -40°C to 60°C and requires a minimum of 51 mm clearance at both the top and bottom for proper ventilation.
  • Product Lifecycle Stage

    Obsolete/Discontinued by OEM

On September 1, 2024, Rockwell Automation officially changed the lifecycle status of the 1783-BMS20CL to "Discontinued". This means that the factory has completely stopped assembly line production of this model, and all new system designs or maintenance replacements have been transitioned to the officially recommended next-generation Stratix 5200 series replacement model 1783-CMS20DB.

Ask our team:

  • What is the current official lifecycle status of the 1783-BMS20CL, and what is its recommended replacement?
The 1783-BMS20CL was officially discontinued by Rockwell Automation on September 01, 2024. The manufacturer officially recommends the 1783-CMS20DB from the newer Stratix 5200 family as its direct engineering replacement.
  • Do the combo ports and SFP slots on the 1783-BMS20CL support Gigabit Ethernet data rates?
No. The 1783-BMS20CL is a full Fast Ethernet architecture device. Its 2 combo ports and 2 SFP slots are strictly limited to a maximum speed of 10/100 Mbps.
  • Does the “Lite” firmware type on the 1783-BMS20CL affect its direct PLC diagnostics functionality in Studio 5000?
No, it does not. Although the 1783-BMS20CL features the Lite firmware type, it still maintains premium integration within the Logix ecosystem. The PLC can access real-time status diagnostics and port alarms directly using predefined Logix tags without needing custom communication code.
  • Does the 1783-BMS20CL industrial switch natively support Device Level Ring (DLR) network redundancy?
Yes. The 1783-BMS20CL deeply supports the Device Level Ring (DLR) protocol. This feature allows for millisecond-level network self-healing in the event of a single link failure, preventing unplanned production downtime.
  • Can the 1783-BMS20CL be safely deployed inside unconditioned or non-ventilated outdoor enclosures?
Yes. The 1783-BMS20CL features an IP30 rating and an open-style fanless cooling design. It is built to withstand hash conditions with a wide operating temperature range from -40 °C to 60 °C (-40 °F to 140 °F).
