Mission-Critical Applications
Features:
- Triconex 3201 / CM3201 (Often found in sub-variants like CM3201 S2)
- Operates on a 24V DC nominal input voltage with a maximum power draw of 10W
- Each standalone module is equipped with two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet network ports and three optically isolated RS-232/RS-485 serial ports
The Triconex CM3201 is a high-reliability communication module developed by Invensys (now a Schneider Electric company) specifically for Trident Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). In industrial automation, its core function is to act as a high-speed communication bridge between Trident safety controllers and external systems such as DCS distributed control systems, host monitoring software, network printers, or other safety systems.
This module boasts strong protocol compatibility, natively supporting standard Modbus RTU/ASCII (master/slave mode) and Ethernet-based Modbus TCP/IP, while seamlessly running Triconex's proprietary point-to-point logical communication and TriStation configuration management protocols. In terms of hardware configuration and network expansion, the CM3201 provides multiple layers of redundancy and isolation protection for the physical link. The module is equipped with multiple independent interfaces, including a high-speed Ethernet port with a maximum speed of 100 Mbps and a serial communication port supporting RS-232/RS-485 physical interfaces.
The CM3201 Triconex High-performance communication module may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The CM3201's function is to transmit telemetry data from a secure, isolated environment to the plant-wide monitoring network without affecting core safety logic loops. It natively supports industrial multi-protocol conversion:
1.Modbus Master/Slave: The serial interface has unique addressability, allowing direct communication with distributed control systems (DCS), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), or traditional RTUs using Modbus RTUs or Modbus TCP/IP.
2.TriStation Interface: Dedicated configuration mapping allows serial or network ports to connect to Schneider Electric's TriStation software toolkit, enabling secure application updates, diagnostic log retrieval, and diagnostic viewing.
3.Triconex Point-to-Point Communication (TSAA): Supports native point-to-point communication routines and safety-critical time synchronization protocols for calibrating clocks between distributed safety nodes.
Because the entire Triconex hardware family complies with IEC 61508 SIL 3 (Safety Integrity Level 3) functional safety rating, the CM3201 is widely used in high-risk process facilities. It serves as the primary data uplink for emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, commercial boiler burner management systems (BMS), and fire and gas (F&G) protection networks in chemical refineries, upstream offshore drilling platforms, and nuclear power plants.
