Its primary function is to ensure the preservation of critical system data (such as user programs, configuration parameters, and runtime diagnostic information) during mains power outages. By maintaining memory integrity, the 6ES7971-0BA00 supports reliable controller restarts and prevents data loss in industrial control applications.
It enables faster recovery after power failures by ensuring the integrity of previously stored control logic and system states. This reduces downtime and eliminates the need for manual reprogramming or system reinitialization, thereby improving overall maintenance efficiency in industrial environments.
The 6ES7971-0BA00 Siemens Back Up Battery may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

During normal operation, the system is powered by the mains power supply, and the battery is in standby mode. In the event of a power outage, the 6ES7971-0BA00 will automatically start to maintain the continuous voltage of the memory, ensuring that the stored data is not lost until the main power is restored.
Downtime Prevention: No need to re-upload or reconfigure the PLC after a power outage, which is crucial for manufacturing and process control.
Maintenance Support: Programming data is preserved during hardware upgrades or routine maintenance when the system is powered off.
Industrial Environments: Suitable for demanding environments such as oil and gas, automotive manufacturing, and power generation due to its wide operating temperature range and high safety standards.
Passivation Film Removal: Lithium-ion batteries may develop a passivation film during storage. The S7-400 power module is designed to automatically remove this film when the battery is inserted. However, some technicians may briefly short-circuit the battery (1-3 seconds) before installation to ensure immediate normal operation.
Redundancy: Many power modules support two batteries. In "2BATT" mode, the system uses one battery as the primary battery, switching to the second battery only when the primary battery is depleted.
Monitoring: Always monitor the BATT1F, BATT2F, or BAF indicator lights on the power module. Illumination indicates a battery malfunction or low charge; the battery must be replaced to prevent data loss.
