Its operating principle is as a communication gateway for remote I/O stations. It receives control signals from Siemens PROFINET industrial Ethernet via a built-in two-port switch, converts them into backplane bus signals, and then transmits these signals to the individual I/O modules connected to it. Simultaneously, it acquires sensor signals or actuator status in real time and packages them for feedback to the upper-level controller (e.g., S7-1500 CPU). This closed-loop data exchange enables distributed control, effectively simplifies field wiring, and enhances the system's scalability and flexibility.
Please note that this particular model (6AA01) is planned to be phased out and will be replaced by the fully compatible successor model 6ES7155-6AU02-0BN0.
