Features:
- The digital output module has 16 output ports to meet the needs of various control applications
- Consumes 150 mA @ 5V DC and 180 mA @ 24V DC
- 1,500 VAC dielectric isolation between backplane logic and field contacts
The Allen Bradley 1746-OW16 is one of the SLC 500 series digital output modules, providing essential functionality for automation and control tasks. It supports 16 outputs, each with 8 common points of connection. This configuration allows for efficient application in control strategies involving multiple devices. The module operates in normally open (NT) mode, allowing for flexible creation of desired circuit configurations.
In terms of load handling, the 1746-OW16 has a minimum load current of 10mA at 5VDC, ensuring efficient driving of connected devices. Its backplane current consumption rating is 0.170A at 5VDC and 0.180A at 24VDC, demonstrating extremely high power efficiency.
The 1746-OW16 Allen Bradley Digital Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

A key highlight of this module is its continuous AC output capability of up to 16.0A, enabling users to efficiently drive large loads, with a maximum output current of 8.0A per common connection point. The module reduces maximum shutdown leakage current to 0mA, ensuring energy efficiency and performance reliability.
Signal delay is precisely calibrated, with a 10ms delay for both on and off states under maximum resistive load conditions. Power consumption at each output point is only 0.033 watts, resulting in a minimum power consumption of only 5.170 watts for the entire module. In summary, the 1746-OW16 digital output module is a powerful solution for industrial automation applications.
Because this module uses physical mechanical relay contacts instead of solid-state electronic components, it is prone to mechanical wear over time.
Contact Welding: When switching highly inductive loads (such as large electromagnetic coils or motor contactors), the contacts open, generating an electric arc. Without proper external surge suppression, this arcing can eventually cause the internal contacts to weld shut, permanently leaving the output "on" even if the PLC logic shuts it down.
Removable Terminal Blocks (RTB): This module uses color-coded 1746-RT25C removable terminal blocks. This eliminates the need to disconnect and reconnect all 16 field cables individually when replacing a faulty module.
