The PC-E984-685 is a classic mid-to-large-sized slot-type programmable logic controller (PLC) module in Schneider Electric's Modicon 984 series, integrating a processor and power supply. Its primary function is as the computing and control core of industrial automation systems, designed specifically for handling complex discrete and continuous process control logic. This module features 16K user memory and 10K data memory, directly supporting five local 800 series I/O frames. With the S908 remote processor, it can be expanded to control up to 31 remote I/O stations.
It integrates a universal power supply component, allowing direct connection to 115/230V AC (or 24V DC) operating voltages without the need for cumbersome additional power supply module configurations. At the communication interface layer, it is equipped with two standard Modbus serial ports and one Modbus Plus high-speed network interface. This enables it to perform multiple Modbus communication polls simultaneously and, within the same control cycle, conduct high-speed point-to-point data sharing and configuration downloads with host computers (SCADA), programming panels (such as the P190 terminal), and other PLCs via Modbus Plus LAN, thus providing robust interconnectivity for industrial networks.
The PC-E984-685 Schneider Electric Modicon Programmable Controller may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

The PC-E984-685 is a high-capacity controller node capable of coordinating large-scale industrial physical loops:
Local Subrack: Provides line-level connectivity, directly handling up to five local racks of Modicon 800 Series I/O modules.
Remote Network Expansion: Supports extended layouts with up to 31 remote I/O interfaces. Note that configuring a remote I/O layout requires this device to be used with an optional S908 remote I/O processor (e.g., AS-S908-110).
Hot Standby (Redundancy): Fully compatible with the optional S911-800 hot standby processor. This layout configures two identical 685 controllers, one in primary and one in standby mode, enabling seamless failover within 13 to 48 milliseconds in the event of an internal failure of the primary CPU.
The PC-E984-685 employs a classic cyclic scanning mechanism and dual-core shadow copy redundancy technology. Within each defined control cycle, its 16-bit CPU operates in a cyclic manner, following the steps of "input sampling—program execution—output refresh".
Upon system startup, the physical status of all sensors and transmitters in the plant is first read via the local backplane or remote I/O link and mapped to the status RAM. Subsequently, the CPU sequentially executes user-defined ladder diagrams or special function blocks (DX) logic at a high-speed logic solver speed of 1 ms/1000 steps, continuously initiating hardware pulse self-tests for flash memory and cables.
If the system is configured with an S911 hot standby module, the main controller will synchronize the latest status RAM data to the standby controller in real time via an internal synchronization link at the end of each scan cycle (shadow copy).
If the main controller fails or loses its heartbeat, the standby controller can physically take over all communication and control outputs within 13 to 48 milliseconds without reinitialization, thus ensuring absolute safety and uninterrupted operation of the production loop.
