Product Information:

The Allen-Bradley 1771-NIS/C is a traditional 8-channel high-resolution isolated analog current input module belonging to the Rockwell Automation PLC-5 / Bulletin 1771 platform. The "/C" suffix indicates the C series and represents the last hardware and firmware version of this module before the end of the platform's lifecycle. Unlike basic analog input modules, the 1771-NIS is a "smart block transfer module" designed to handle precise current loops and power its own loops.

Overview Manuals Lifecycle & Migration Status Important Notes

Features:

  • 8 channels, fully isolated from channel-to-channel and channel-to-backplane
  • 0 to 21 mA (optimized for standard 4–20 mA industrial current loops)
  • Highly precise 16-bit unipolar resolution (330 nA/bit) providing 65,535 counts
The Allen-Bradley 1771-NIS is an I/O module belonging to the 1771-N high-resolution I/O module family. It features eight current input channels with a rated current range of 4-20mA. The 1771-NIS module provides loop power to the input circuitry. The 1771-NIS draws 2.4A from the I/O chassis backplane, with a total power consumption of 12W. The 1771-NIS can be connected to PLC-5/250, PLC-3, and PLC-5 controllers.

The 1771-NIS input channels support a current range of 0.1–21mA. The input channel resolution is 330nA/bit (16-bit unipolar), and the maximum input impedance is 300Ω. The module provides a 20–30V DC loop supply (current range 0 to 20mA). The 1771-NIS module can detect open circuits within 5 seconds and provides 24V DC overvoltage protection. Its common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) is 150 dB, with a typical value of 50 dB. Offset drift is ±200 nA/°C, and gain drift is ±95 ppm/°C. The maximum update time per module is 25 seconds, and the input channel bandwidth is 9 Hz.

The 1771-NIS/C Allen Bradley N-Series Analog I/O Module may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Discontinuation: Rockwell Automation officially discontinued the entire 1771 I/O series in 2017. Modern Migration Path: If you are upgrading your system to ControlLogix, Rockwell offers dedicated conversion systems, such as the 1492-CONACAB migration cable, to seamlessly transition your 1771-N Series cabling infrastructure to 1756 I/O modules.
The 1771-NIS, 1771-NBSC and 1771-NB4S modules are sourcing/sinking input modules. These modules can supply the necessary loop power for 2-wire transmitters connected to the input. All loop power functionality is contained within the analog module. No external resistors are required.

Technical notes

The Allen-Bradley 1771-NIS/C is a high-resolution, isolated 8-channel 4-20mA analog input module designed for PLC-5 systems. It integrates a loop power supply and employs 16-bit resolution and high common-mode rejection ratio to ensure measurement accuracy. This module requires asynchronous data exchange via block transfer commands within the rack. Due to the sensitivity of its internal circuitry, for system safety, it is strictly forbidden to plug or unplug the module while it is powered on.
