Product Information:

1762-L40BWA is an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1200 programmable controller manufactured by Rockwell Automation. It combines a 100…240 V AC power supply, 24 embedded 24 V DC inputs (20 standard and 4 fast inputs), 16 relay outputs, 6 KB memory, and an RS-232C interface in one 40-point controller.

The primary serial channel supports DF1, DH-485, Modbus RTU, and ASCII. The controller can use up to six 1762 expansion I/O modules, subject to the system power-loading calculation. Typical uses are discrete machine and process-control applications that require local sensor inputs, relay outputs, and serial communications.

Lifecycle: Rockwell Automation lists this catalog number as discontinued effective August 25, 2021. The replacement category is Engineering Replacement; the official product page does not name a direct drop-in catalog number. Migration therefore requires an engineering review of supply voltage, I/O type and count, relay loading, serial protocols, program conversion, expansion modules, wiring, dimensions, and certifications.

Overview Manuals Principle Core Industrial Applications Hazardous Area Certifications

Features:

  • MicroLogix 1200 40-point controller module
  • Features 24 inputs, is compatible with 24V DC input voltage
  • Supports both sinking and sourcing wiring configurations
The input channels are designed to connect 24VDC input devices, supporting both sinking and sourcing wiring. The outputs are contact-type outputs, rated at 25-125VDC or 120-240VAC, with a mechanical life of 20,000,000 cycles and a minimum load current of 10A.

Since the 1762-L40BWA is electronic equipment, it needs to be installed in a well-protected enclosure. The enclosure temperature must be maintained between +0°C and +55°C. Depending on the installation location, it is recommended to install suitable temperature control equipment within the enclosure, such as a heater, fan, or a combination of both

The 1762-L40BWA Allen Bradley 40-point controller module may still be available for purchase and support from Moore Automated Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

This controller integrates an 8-pin Mini DIN RS232 communication port, supporting DH-485, DF1 full-duplex and half-duplex, Modbus master and slave protocols, and ASCII protocol. DF1, ASCII, and Modbus operate internally in point-to-point mode. This serial port can be multiplexed using converters to enable communication with multiple devices. These converters can be RS223 to Ethernet converters or RS232 to RS485 converters.
This controller is widely used in industries requiring cost-effective and powerful machine-level automation:
Manufacturing and Machine Control: Suitable for assembly lines, packaging machinery (filling, capping, labeling), and CNC machine tools.
Material Handling: Controls conveyor systems and sorting equipment in warehouses or production facilities.
Building Automation: Manages HVAC systems to optimize energy use and maintain environmental conditions.
Utilities and Process Control: Used for pump and valve control in water and wastewater treatment, as well as power distribution load balancing.

Hazardous Area Certifications

Rockwell publication 1762-UM001I-EN-P includes Class I, Division 2 installation requirements for MicroLogix 1200 controllers, including use of the specified communication cables and explosion-hazard precautions. Certification is determined by the marking on the exact controller or its packaging; verify that marking and the applicable certificate before installation in a hazardous location.

Technical notes

Rockwell Automation classifies 1762-L40BWA as an Engineering Replacement rather than a published drop-in substitution. Before migration, verify 100…240 V AC supply compatibility, 24 V DC input characteristics, 16 relay-output loading and grouping, DF1/DH-485/Modbus RTU/ASCII communications, RSLogix 500 program conversion, 1762 expansion-I/O loading, wiring, mounting dimensions, and required certifications. Do not assume that another 1762-L40 controller suffix is interchangeable: AWA, BWA, BXB, and R versions have different input, output, power, or communication configurations.
