Its primary function is to act as a bridge between safety-grade field devices and the standard DeviceNet network, seamlessly integrating safety I/O (such as emergency stop buttons and light curtains) into distributed control architectures.
By providing highly reliable communication, it ensures that safety-critical data is transmitted with the necessary integrity to meet international safety standards such as SIL3 or PLe. In addition to basic communication functions, the module offers robust diagnostic capabilities and flexible I/O management.

The NE2A-DNS21 utilizes the CIP Safety (Common Industrial Protocol Safety) protocol based on the DeviceNet physical layer. It continuously performs a dual-channel cross-check mechanism on all incoming safety signals to detect internal hardware faults or external line faults, such as short circuits. When a safety event occurs or a communication error is detected, the module immediately switches to a predefined "safe state" (typically shutting down all outputs) and broadcasts a high-priority safety message to the main controller to initiate an emergency stop or safe shutdown of the entire network.
